About

News, tips and inspiration for a more considered way of being.

In A Sustainable Way promotes brands that strive to thrive today without harming the prospects of future generations.

In A Sustainable Way is founded and edited by Ilona Marchetta, a Sustainability Practitioner certified by the two globally leading Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting frameworks, Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB). Ilona is also a change manager and a communications specialist with over 20 years’ experience.

“I believe that when you actively choose to make more sustainable choices, you participate more fully in your own life,” Ilona says.

“Living more sustainably is to live more emotionally connected to the stuff we surround ourselves with.

“Modern production and distribution practices in the developed world mean we don’t really get to see how anything is made anymore, where it comes from, what it took to create. There is barely any semblance left of the old marketplace, where you could talk one to one with the beekeeper, the farmer, the milliner. Gone is our respect for the time it takes to make stuff. We reject the true cost of things in favour of having more things. Production is hidden. And when we can’t see it, it’s easy to care less about it.

“As a result, we surround ourselves with things without really understanding what they are, with less of an appreciation than if we had participated in their creation, and that we can very easily discard because of our minimal emotional connection to them.

“This is mindless consumption.

Mindless consumption is a reflection of how detached we’ve become from our own lives.

Mindless consumption is shallow consumption. When we mindlessly consume, we miss the beautifully complex interplay between ourselves and the world around us. We’re oblivious to the secret life of our things, including the life that made them.

To become more mindful of our consumption is to engage more fully in our lives.”
